How The Summer Sun Can Help Your Smile

The sun may be hot, but it’s definitely the coolest star out there. It gives light, helps your food grow, keeps you warm, and even makes your body produce vitamin D, which is vital to your oral health.

So, this summer, don’t hide inside. Slather on some SPF and take advantage of the amazing benefits of the sun!

The Importance of Vitamin D

Your body produces vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight. This occurs when the sun’s UVB rays interact with a protein in your body called 7-DHC. Sunlight converts this protein into vitamin D3, which is the active form of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is responsible for many oral health benefits including increased calcium absorption, which can strengthen teeth and bones. It can also promote immune system regulation that can help keep you safe from infections, germs, and viruses, and it can even lower your risk of tooth decay by up to 50 percent.

Vitamin D and Gum Health

Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency can cause inflammation, one of the contributing factors to serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and some autoimmune diseases. It can also cause or negatively affect gum disease.

Gum disease occurs when the gums are infected by bacteria. This can lead to tissue loss, gum recession, tooth loss, and even bone deterioration. Thankfully, it can often be prevented by getting plenty of vitamin D, by practicing excellent oral hygiene (brushing twice a day and flossing  at least once a day), and by regularly visiting your dentist for your routine, semi-annual dental exams.

Sources of Vitamin D

Looking for a free and easy way to boost your vitamin D levels? Just 10 to 30 minutes of direct noontime sunlight exposure can help your body to naturally produce enough to stay healthy, even if you’re wearing SPF or other sun protection.

You can also increase your vitamin D by taking a vitamin D supplement or eating a diet consisting of fatty fish, eggs, lean protein, and fortified dairy.

So don’t feel bad about shunning the shade this summer. Get out in the sun and protect your gums with the help of vitamin D!
